Juliana Birnbaum
Juliana will present information from her book “Sustainable Revolution: Permaculture in Ecovillages, Urban Farms, and Communities Worldwide”

Having had the opportunity to visit numerous permaculture sites and ecovillages worldwide, Juliana enjoys sharing inspiring examples of sustainable solutions across climates and cultures.
Trained as a cultural anthropologist and skilled in four languages, Juliana has lived and worked in the U.S., Europe, Japan, Nepal Costa Rica and Brazil. In 2005 she founded Voices in Solidarity, an initiative that partnered with Ashaninka indigenous tribal leaders from the Brazilian Amazon to support the development of the Yorenka Ãtame community-led environmental educational center featured in Sustainable [R]evolution.
She has written about ecovillages, native rights and social justice issues in a variety of newspapers, indigenous journals, blogs and anthologies including Zester Daily, E-The Environmental Magazine, Bridges Journal, El Reportero, The Rising Nepal, World Rainforest Movement Bulletin, Quechua Network, and Cultural Survival Quarterly.
Juliana, along with co-author Louis Fox, wrote the book “Sustainable [R]evolution: Permaculture in Ecovillages, Urban Farms and Communities Worldwide,” published in 2014 by North Atlantic Books and distributed by Random House. She was the first graduate of the Cornerstone Doula School, one of the most rigorous natural birth programs in the U.S., focusing on a holistic model of care. She is engaged variously as writer, editor, teacher, midwife assistant and mother when not attempting yoga poses or gardening.

Juliana will present a slideshow featuring beautifully-photographed permaculture sites around the world and offer books on a sliding scale. The talk will include an invitation for discussion and a question and answer session. If you can’t be there and want to get the book, go to CultureOfPermaculture.org
“I think my presentation might be fun to do as a kind of summary of the whole course, since I don’t just focus on the communities but on the different technologies and approaches in Natural Building, Energy, etc… I can commit to be part of the closing party, on the Friday 7/14. I will not be on call for any births though, so that’s good : )”
